Google Talk

Quotes

"The curious thing about the Readymade is that I've never been able to arrive at a definition or explanation that fully satisfies me."
Marcel Duchamp (Tomkins 159)

"Manufactured objects promoted to the dignity of objects of art through the choice of the artist"
Andre Breton (Schwarz 44)

"What is needed is not so much a single definition as a series of definitions"
Arturo Schwarz (Schwarz 44)

"Has any other modern artist ever given so many interviews about such a small number of objects without revealing anything very definite about their meaning or intention?"
Hilton Kramer (Kramer 6)

"Interpretations do not take into account the readymade's indifference to the task of offering a coherent significance"
Carter Ratcliff (Ratcliff 86)

"Any attempt to establish a formula, a key, or some other type of guiding principle by which to assess or in other ways interpret the artistic production of Marcel Duchamp would be - in the humble opinion of the present author - an entirely futile endeavor... each creative effort was conceived with the intention of consciously defying convenient categorization."
Francis M. Naumann (Kuenzli Marcel 20)

Animal aided

This is what I call: “Animal aided expected conformation”. These objects are empty boxes of garlic that I took in the greengrocer. I made a pile with these boxes in my apartment and wait for my cat’s help. During the night my friends tried to clamber the pyramid. I think the neighbors didn’t like the sound, but I liked the result. The spire yellow and black complete the scene, as if it is controlling the boxes flux.

Little sears Aided

Like the “Animal Aided”, I use to call this kind of readymade: “Little sears Aided”, in reference to insects that change the natural or human-created environments. In this case, the termite changed the structure of this doorjamb. I need to confess that this peace of work was not expected, but after months looking for this texture, I was convinced that was a real readymade.

Laborer Surface

Here we have a mixture of human and chaos working together, i.e.: a human being combined these tools without any intentions. Then we have the additions of dust and sawdust; finally we have what I call “Laborer Surface”. I have my doubts if it’s a good name, but don’t have other idea.

Workers Conformation

I purchased these three panels from some workmen that constructed a building in front of my house. The first time I saw the gross conformation of these tools in these panels I recalled a work by Max Ernst called “Fruit d'une longue espérience”, in which the artist attached objects – that remember woodworker tools - in a traditional canvas. I named this category of readymade: “Workers Conformation”.

Mistreated Readymade

This is a creased package for Chinese toy. Many people have trampled this poor package until I found and collected it, aggregating in my personal collection. Looking for this tattered box I remembered the Duchamp’s “Unhappy Readymade”. But in the Chinese package case, the main agent of transformation is people feet, instead of the wind – i.e.: climatic x human. Then I made a little adaptation to the original name gave by Duchamp. I call this kind of Readymade “Mistreated Readmade”.
